You may think that paying for your coach hire is a given, the coach hire company wants your payment and they will take it any way they can get it.

Well not necessarily, coach hire companies are not like a supermarket, you can’t always simply walk in and swipe your card or hand over a 20 pound note and be done with it.

Coach hire companies work with much larger amounts than 20 pounds for a start and so they want to make sure that they have their money before you go out in the coach or before you are dropped off at the end of the event or meeting for which you hired the coach.

Therefore, some coach hire companies won’t simply take credit card details on the day as they will need time to run them through their machine and check that the payment goes through. Also, if you are paying with cheque you may have to pay in advance so the coach hire company can again check whether the cheque has cleared before the event.

Coach hire companies therefore often take credit card details over the phone or their secure internet site before your event, but are you comfortable giving your credit card details to a company over the phone or internet? Also, if you are hiring a coach you may not have a driver’s license and therefore insufficient ID to be paying with a cheque to satisfy the coach hire company.

Then there is a simple cash payment, however coach hire can often cost hundreds (sometimes thousands) of pounds, do you want to be carrying that sort of money around?

So while the coach hire companies do everything they can to ensure their passengers don’t have a chance to avoid payment, this can mean that you may not be entirely comfortable with the payment methods open to you.

Therefore, before you confirm your coach hire, ask about the payment methods of the coach hire company and find out if they are negotiable until you are comfortable too.
