Taunton Castle is a magnificent building with an uncomfortable past. With a staggeringly long history, parts of the castle date back to the 12th century, it now houses the Somerset County Museum but there was a time when its activities were far less honourable. Following the defeat of the rebellion in 1685 Judge Jeffrey rounded up all suspected rebels and put them on trial inside the great walls of the castle. Hundreds of men were tried in only 3 days; most were found guilty and were subsequently hanged, drawn, and quartered.
